In January 2007, in response to the discovery of quagga
mussels (a closely related species to the zebra mussel) in the Colorado
River system (Lakes Mead, Mohave, and Havasu), California implemented
a statewide survey of all California waterways (lakes, reservoirs,
rivers, and water diversions) to delineate the extent of the population.
The interagency Quagga Mussel Incident Response Team trained survey
crews in quagga and zebra mussel surveying techniques. Training covered
mussel identification, sampling techniques, survey protocol, and data
reporting requirements. Below are the links to the protocols, data
sheets and training presentations that were developed. The California
Department of Fish and Game now coordinate all quagga/zebra mussel
training for the State. To learn more about the quagga mussel invasion
and management response activities in California, visit Incident
